There are a lot of things that make me sad. And definitely one of them is to see overweight/obese children. I know in most of the cases, it is due to poor eating choices, either by them or provided by the parents/caregivers. But there is some new research that suggests that a dormant virus can also lead to childhood obesity.

In case you didn’t know, September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. But awareness means nothing with the application of knowledge.

According to an article at SCIENCE DAILY – ” a cross-sectional study done researchers from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine  found that children exposed to a particular strain of adenovirus were significantly more likely to be obese.

The study will be published in the September 20 online edition of the journal Pediatrics.  Jeffrey B. Schwimmer, MD, associate professor of clinical pediatrics at UC San Diego, and colleagues examined 124 children, ages 8 to 18, for the presence of antibodies specific to adenovirus 36 (AD36), one of more than 50 strains of adenovirus known to infect humans and cause a variety of respiratory, gastrointestinal and other infections. AD36 is the only human adenovirus currently linked to human obesity.

The majority of these AD36-positive children (78 percent) were obese, with AD36 antibodies much more frequent in obese children (15 of 67) than in non-obese children (4 of 57)”

So obviously for these kids, beside ensuring they are eating healthy and getting plenty of exercise, the next thing to address is this virus in their body. The radar is going off  today on several health/news site about a trial that was done on school age children and the effectiveness of Vitamin D3 in preventing Influenza A.

The study involved a total of 334 children. The results show 18 of the 167 taking the Vitamin D3 still got the flu. BUT 31 or the 167 taking the placebo got the flu. That means the Vitamin D3 had a success rate of 8%.

The conclusion was: “This study suggests that vitamin D3 supplementation during the winter may reduce the incidence of influenza A, especially in specific subgroups of schoolchildren. This trial was registered at https://center.umin.ac.jp as UMIN000001373.”

What I found interesting is that this study was done from December 2008 through March 2009. With the study results being published February 2010, the height of flu season. But did your Dr. EVER recommend taking a supplement to avoid the flu? NO? What did he/she recommend? A shot? Really? Did you know that the efficacy of the flu vaccine over nonvaccination is only 1%?

Here’s the proof to that little known fact:

(The combined results of these trials showed that under ideal conditions (vaccine completely matching circulating viral configuration) 33 healthy adults need to be vaccinated to avoid one set of influenza symptoms. In average conditions (partially matching vaccine) 100 people need to be vaccinated to avoid one set of influenza symptoms.)

If I did my math right,  the Vitamin D is 800% more effective that a vaccine. GASP!!!! And it is SAFE to boot!

Most natural health practitioners recommend taking Vitamin D from Labor Day through Memorial Day. So with the flu season fast approaching you better stock up now, because I am hoping the word will spread and there will be a “run” on D3 this winter. Oh my … what a problem to have.
