How To Free Yourself From Addiction in the New Year

Guest Post By Constance Ray, founder of www.recoverywell.org

For many, a new year represents the time to make some major life changes. The new year offers a new beginning and a clean slate to march forward into a better version of yourself. Having an addiction can be a crippling force that indeed seems to dissipate life right before your eyes. Making the decision to beat your addiction is a wise choice and there is no better time to start than now. Use these steps as a guide to assist you in leaving your pattern of addiction in the past and embracing all the possibilities your new life will provide.

Seek treatment

Chances are if you are reading this, you have already come to terms with the fact that addiction is a problem in your life. You have already acknowledged the issue and determined that you want to make a change for the better. Even though addiction is a lonely disease, you cannot overcome it by yourself. Take the time to scour your local area for treatment centers and facilities that specialize in your area of habit. Overcoming addiction is no easy feat, so make sure you will be comfortable and well taken care of in your facility of choice. Also, consider the track record of the facility measured by the number of success stories produced by their program. It is important that you set yourself up for success in this journey, so finding the proper facility to assist you on your journey is indeed a crucial step.

Separate yourself from negative influences

In order to achieve the results you want to achieve, you have to do things you have never done. You must eliminate destructive patterns and people who will enable your attempt at reaching sobriety. Perform an audit of your current lifestyle and daily choices and remove what will no longer fit with the life you are trying to create. This may be hard to perform, but it is a critical step in your road to recovery.

Replace the old habits with new, more filling choices. Identify your support system and keep them close. Make your home into a place that caters to your sobriety. It is important that you share with your support group that you are beginning the process of recovery and that their backing will help you maintain forward motion on the road ahead of you. Each step may be challenging, but having a good team behind you will assure that you have forces in place to help you get back up should you stumble.

Accept the process

Developing an addiction does not happen overnight and neither does the recovery process. You will have to accept the process on the road to better health and know that it may very well be the most challenging thing you have ever done. Accept that there will be long nights and sometimes you will question if you made the right decision. Stand firm in your choice and know that this is all a part of the healing process. Your body has become dependent on your habit and now you have to retrain it to know how to function sans habit. Remind yourself daily that you can get through this, and again use your support team to guide you when your motivation is waning.

Making the choice to be sober in the new year will indeed be one of the best decisions you have made in your life. You are making a commitment to yourself to remove yourself and your loved ones from the shackles of addiction, which is admirable within its own right. Continue to move forward on the road to recovery and know that you can and will successfully put addiction in its rightful place —behind you.

Question: What are you without an immune system?
Answer: You are dead.

As morbid as it may sound, it’s true. When your immune system is weak you will get sick. When your immune system completely fails you will die.
