5 ways plant based foods can radically boost your weight loss

Let’s face it, losing weight is easy for some. But for others of us it seems next to impossible to achieve significant weight loss. My guest blogger, Cynthia Pasquella from Hungry Hotties has broken it down for us to understand how fun and how easy it is to add more veggies to the menu, to help explode that weight loss barrier.

Weight loss veggies1) They contain fiber!
Fiber literally cleans out your system and helps you shed pounds just through elimination alone.  Plus, it’s is incredibly filling!  Studies show that when you eat more fiber, you eat less food in general.

But that’s not all!  Fiber-filled foods take a long time to chew.  This allows your brain enough time to signal that you are full!  It forces you (gently) to slow down and in turn you become more mindful and appreciative of your meal.  Yes, fiber can do ALL of that!

2) No more counting calories – ever!
I can’t tell you how many of my clients I have had to rehab from obsessive calorie counting.  I must say, I was one of these people.  As a professional fitness competitor, this is one of the first things I learned to do.  And yet, if you know my story, you know I soon discovered that the calories in/calories out equation just wasn’t adding up!

When it comes to weight loss, quality is MUCH more important than calories.  And that’s what’s so amazing about a whole food, plant-based diet!  You never, and I mean NEVER have to worry about counting calories again.  You can eat as many veggies as your gorgeous little heart desires!  Go ahead, knock yourself out!

3) They boost energy!
High fiber plant-based foods are the best source for lasting energy.

Processed foods can give you a quick high followed by a major energy crash later on.  And animal foods take SO much energy to metabolize leaving you with very little pep in your step.  When you’re sluggish, not only do you want to park it on the couch, but your body also craves more food (specifically fattening carbohydrates and sugar) to get that next energy fix. But plant-based foods are the perfect fuel to keep your fire burning for the long haul!

Your body takes longer to break down plant-based foods so you don’t experience the insulin spike or weighed down feeling that comes from processed and animal-based foods.  And more energy means more motivation to MOVE!  I don’t have to tell you just how important exercise is for weight loss.  So next time you’re heading to a workout, fuel yourself with carrots, not candy!

4) They cleanse and detoxify naturally!
Toxic burden is a major reason we hold onto weight.  This is something that most people don’t really talk about.  When toxins collect in your body, they can really pay tricks on your system.  They slow your body’s ability to metabolize cholesterol and balance blood sugar leading to obesity and diabetes.

Fiber-rich plant foods are one of the best detoxifying tools.  They help you clean out your colon and literally flush out all the funk!  Not only does this leave you lighter and leaner, you’ll find your whole body just functions better!  You absorb and use the calories and nutrients you need and toss those you don’t.  It’s like giving your body an oil change.   Everything just runs smoother!

5) They provide relief from addiction!
Now this is a sensitive subject, but one I am personally acquainted with. Food was my drug. I turned to it when I was sad, anxious, bored, celebrating or…just plain awake!  That quick surge of serotonin and dopamine from sugary and fried foods was all I could do to stay afloat.  I honestly thought I would never be free from this addiction.  It ran my life and ran me into the ground!

But something magical happened when I started eating a whole foods plant-based diet.  My food was simply not giving me the rush I was so used to.  I felt more balanced overall.  My mood became much more even-keel and over time my obsessive relationship with food just disappeared.  I felt the amazing effects of how food could not only nourish, but also heal me.

The healthier I ate, the more I wanted to eat healthy!  If I didn’t make the change to a plant-based diet I know I would still be battling with late night binges, just staring into the bottom of a gallon of ice cream waiting for my next hit.

Question: What are you without an immune system?
Answer: You are dead.

As morbid as it may sound, it’s true. When your immune system is weak you will get sick. When your immune system completely fails you will die.
