Calcium and vitamin D supplements reduce the risk of bone fractures in everyone, young and old

(NaturalNews) In recent years, Big Pharma has produced a variety of widely hyped bisphosphonate drugs including alendronate (Fosamax), ibandronate (Boniva), risedronate (Actonel) and zoledronic acid (Reclast) that are aimed at preserving bone mass and reducing the risk of fractures. But a new study involving almost 70,000 people from throughout the U.S. and Europe shows that nutrients — calcium and vitamin D taken together — offer a natural, side effect-free way to prevent fractures.

Because broken bones are a major cause of disability and loss of independence for elders, these findings are of particular interest to older people. In fact, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), fall-related injuries are the leading cause of accidental death among Americans age 65 and older. However, fractures can be serious at any age, causing pain, sometimes necessitating surgery and almost always restricting activities.
Good news: the researchers found it isn’t only the aged whose bones benefit from taking calcium and vitamin D. Remarkably, they found the supplements reduced fractures in everyone — the young and old, women and men, and even people who had already sustained fractured bones in the past.

The study, published in the January issue of the British Medical Journal, involved an international team of scientists headed by researchers from Copenhagen University in Denmark. They assessed the results of seven large clinical trials from around the world to document whether vitamin D alone or with calcium was effective in reducing fractures.
One of the most important trials included in the new investigation was a long term study conducted at the University of California at Davis (UC Davis) in Sacramento as part of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI). This 15 year long national program was designed to study the effect of calcium and vitamin D supplements in preventing hip, spine and other types of fractures.

“What is important about this very large study is that it goes a long way toward resolving conflicting evidence about the role of vitamin D, either alone or in combination with calcium, in reducing fractures,” John Robbins, professor of internal medicine at UC Davis and a co-author of the journal article, said in a statement to the media. “Our WHI research in Sacramento included more than 1,000 healthy, postmenopausal women and concluded that taking calcium and vitamin D together helped them preserve bone health and prevent fractures. This latest analysis, because it incorporates so many more people, really confirms our earlier conclusions.”

Bottom line: the researchers concluded that it is the combination of calcium and vitamin D, rather than vitamin D alone, that is most effective in reducing a variety of fractures. “Interestingly, this combination of supplements benefits both women and men of all ages, which is not something we fully expected to find,” Dr. Robbins stated. “We now need to investigate the best dosage, duration and optimal way for people to take it.”

“Fat-and-Happy”… Is It True? Study Tells All…

P.S.  I can tell you from my own first-hand experience, which I document in “Fit Over 40″, that my personal 10-year-journey through the muck of obesity was ANYTHING but happy.

I was depressed, to the point of suicide at times (thankfully I never went that far.) I was socially hidden. I wore “fat-clothes” all the time. The few times I HAD to wear jeans or dress pants I rushed home to change into sweats because they were just too damn uncomfortable to tolerate.

Bottom line:  I was “fat-n-miserable”.

I think most people who are overweight or obese feel more despair, sadness, or perhaps just really frustrated than “happy”. Of course you can be happy and be any size, color, shape, etc. But I’ll tell you from my experience that I am MUCH happier now that I’m fit and trim.

Part of that is just because I feel better. The other part is how the brain functions. When you’re more active, you release more “feel-good” hormones… and these are powerful anti-blues hormones… they really make you feel like a champ. At least that’s been my experience.

How I Cured My Flu Symptoms Overnight

d Yesterday I didn’t feel well at all when I woke up.

Here is a list of my symptoms:
My muscles and joints ached, especially in my hands and neck.
My head felt very heavy and it ached as well.
I felt warm and had a bit of a fever.
My throat had a tickle.
My ears felt plugged.
I had a slight cough that seemed to be coming from down in my chest.
I was congested in my nose.
Although I love the color green, the green colored goop that I coughed up a couple of times was quite nasty.

SIDE NOTE: I had most of these symptoms throughout the day, especially the aches and pains. By the time I went to bed I was very tired and I still had a bit of a cough.

By the looks of things, I had come down with the Flu, so I immediately started my Cold/Flu remedy and I am happy to say I am 99% Flu free today.

Here is what I did:

Before I went to bed I started the humidifier close to my bed.

1) After I got up I drank a small glass of cool water with a 1/2 tsp of baking soda mixed in. Every 2-3 hours I did the same thing, for a total of 6 glasses. Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda) makes the body more alkaline. Disease has a difficult time surviving in such an environment.

2) I took 4 Transfer Factor capsules. – Transfer Factor is a proprietary product that is proven to boost the response of the immune system by 273%. Natural Killer cells and Ig Antibodies are the first line of defense the body uses to attack pathogens. Transfer Factor is the most effective natural substance ever created and my family and I have been using it for 8 1/2 years now. I also took 2 more Transfer Factor capsules before I went bed. (I normally just take 2 TFactor a day for general health purposes.)

3) I took 1 drop of Oregano Oil under my tongue 4 times throughout the day. Oregano Oil is a VERY potent anti microbrial.

4) I gargled with a mixture of strong salt water and about 2 table spoons of Hydrogen Peroxide added to it. I did this 4 times through out the day and evening.

5) I drank a lot of extra water and I drank some green tea.

6) I combined an orange, apple, frozen blueberries, frozen spinach, baby carrots, whey protein powder and a splash of grape juice in a blender to make a potent anti oxidant rich smoothie I sipped on throughout the day. Other than that I didn’t feel like eating much.

7) I didn’t do my usual workout for the day, but rather let my body “rest” a bit. I did go outside and took advantage of the fresh air and a few brief minutes when the sun appeared. I took a short nap in the evening, and went to bed by 9:30pm.

This morning I got up at 5:15am as usual. When I woke up, my body did not ache and I feel completely rested. I do not have a cough or any phlegm coming up. My nasal passages are both completely clear. The only symptom that I have slightly is that my ears still seem a little plugged because I can kind of “hear” myself talk.

I will continue much of the same protocol today only in lesser doses overall and I will eat more today.

I will do a workout today… and I can’t wait to get back in the swing of things. I will however cut it down from an hour to about 30 – 40 minutes.

So in a nutshell…. I don’t usually get sick, but when I do I kick into action and nail it to the wall before it has a chance to sink it’s teeth in. And you can do the same thing. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

Oh… speaking of a flat belly… I’d like to give you yet another reason to eat and workout the way I suggest in “Every Other Day Diet” and “7 Minute Body”…

I had to go to the hospital last week. No worries… I’m fine… just a bit of a scare. Definitely enough to wake you up from walking through life like it will never end! But fortunately for me, only a scare.

Anyway, the doctors in the hospital were amazed when they looked at my heart and lungs (they had to make sure I did not have any infection… and I didn’t.)

“Most 46-year-olds do not have these around their heart,” the doctor said as he showed me the pictures they took. You could see all these vessels around the heart and branching off the main arteries.

“Peripheral vessels… they were formed by your exercise program. Well-done! These help keep your heart strong and healthy.”

Every doc that listened to my heart said, “Wow… strong heart!”

Indeed… resistance training makes it so.

Before I left, after the scare went away, I asked the doctor his opinion on my dietary plan. “Well, obviously you are very lean and in fantastic shape for a man of any age.”

Thanks doc, but I wasn’t fishing for a compliment! Since this was a heart doctor I was curious as to his thoughts.

“If you had heart disease, or if you want to prevent it, this is the exact dietary plan I would recommend.”

While I expected to hear this, it was still music to my ears.

So, my higher-than-normal dietary fat and protein, lower-carb, and relatively frequent “fun food” dietplan is “ideal” to combat heart disease according to the good doc. And according to my family doctor.

Remember: A good dietplan and exercise is not always sufficient to keep you disease-freee… but I love what the doctor told me. “People who exercise and eat like you LIVE through it and recover much faster.”

Fortunately I didn’t have a nasty virus to recover from… but if I did, I know my condition would have helped me do just that.
